San Francisco has a strong Mexican heritage, both in history and from its residents. In keeping with tradition, the Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday is also widely celebrated, especially in the Latin neighborhood of the Mission. The event includes the Festival of Altars, where the community beautifully decorates public altars to commemorate loved ones who have passes away. They are often covered in flowers, candles, colorful fabric, photos, and momentos. The other main part of the event is the Walking Procession, where all are invited to walk together surrounded by candles, music, friends, and community members. Many people will have their faces painted in the well known ‘sugar skull’ style, or have on elaborate costumes. The Festival of Altars is in Garfield Park, 26th and Harrison Streets, from 4-11 pm. The Procession starts at 22nd and Bryant, and is from 7-8pm. The event is free. Please remember that Day of the Dead is NOT the same as Halloween- this event is alcohol-free, and should be treated with respect.
